DESPITE the rainy weather, supporters turned out to cheer on the Tour of Britain cyclists as they went through Somerset today.

The race started at West Somerset Railway Station, Minehead, just after 10 am, where a crash has left one of the riders receiving treatment.

The cyclists are now approaching the end of the first of their two South-West stages in Teignmouth.

Graham Bagley, Somerset County Council’s Tour of Britain Project Manager, said: “There was a crash but we are still getting the details.

“The rider is being treated by the race doctor.

“The weather has not been the best but the turn out has been very good.

“We are running a bit behind schedule because of the weather but only by about 15 minutes.”

The cycling world’s elite, including triple Olympic Champion Bradley Wiggins descended on the county to tackle the 171km route, hailed by organisers as the toughest stage the race has ever hosted.
