FURTHER clarification from EDF on planned preparation work at the site of the proposed new Hinkley Point Power Station is needed, according to West Somerset Council.
At a full council meeting last night, councillors asked for more time to clarify technical aspects of EDF’s application for site preparation work.
EDF has also applied to build a temporary jetty to transport bulk material to the construction site.
Cllr Chris Morgan said they have put forward a holding objection, rather than a formal objection, to the preparation work: “This will give us more time to fully understand what will go on at the site.”
EDF are applying for preliminary works to begin at the site, so if the nuclear power station’s planning application is approved, building work can begin immediately.
West Somerset Council Leader Tim Taylor said: “The council is going through the application thoroughly to fulfil its role as representatives of people in West Somerset.”
The deadline for the final round of consultations is on Monday.
Cllr Morgan said: “This is really our last chance to have our say.”
Once people’s views have been read by the council they will put forward any further recommendations for the proposed new build.
Richard Mayson, EDF Energy’s Director of Planning and External Affairs for Nuclear New Build, said: “We are grateful to all those who have taken part in the consultation.
“People’s views are very important to us and we will continue to work together with the local authorities and communities to maximise the benefits to the local area and limit any adverse affects as far as possible.”
