STEPPING down from his position at the church meant just that for a retiring Taunton vicar.

Even after 40 years as a priest, the Rev Nick Taylor was still showing worshippers the ropes when as he abseiled down the tower in a farewell stunt organised by Wilton Scout Group.

The venture was just one in a series of activities as residential homes, community groups, church organisations and staff and students from Bishop Henderson Primary School wished the Rev Taylor and his wife Ruth well in their retirement.

The ceremonies culminated in a service of celebration and thanksgiving at the church on June 19 when the congregation gave the Rev Taylor a round of applause in honour of his 14 years’ service as vicar of St George's.

In his final sermon, the Rev Taylor thanked the congregation for their support, praised those who had helped improve and maintain the fabric of the church and called on the congregation to ensure the church’s spiritual movement continued.

The service was followed by a lunch and presentations in the church hall.

The church has begun the search for a new vicar with the Rev Jenny Jeffery taking on additional responsibilities in the meantime.
