Taunton could lose its fire control centre to Exeter.

Under plans unveiled by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, the facility at Hestercombe House could shut and be moved to the service’s base in Exeter.

The plan is to save money after the Regional Fire Control Centre scheme, which would have seen the service merge its control with all others in the region at Blackbrook, fell through.

The move is due to happen before the lease on the control room expires in October 2012.

Cllr Mark Healey, Chairman of the Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Authority, said: “This is long overdue and will result in a control room that will meet the needs and expectations of the people of Devon and Somerset while providing a modern facility that staff will be proud to be associated with.”

He added that staff will be involved in all stages of the consolidation. He said: “Fire Control staff know what is needed from their perspective and the public so it is important that we not only listen to their views but act upon them.”

In recent years Taunton has lost the market to Bridgwater and its main police station is also set to close with a new custody centre to be built near Bridgwater.

Taunton will retain a smaller police station, which could be based at Deane House, seat of Taunton Deane Council.
