THE Victorian footbridge over the West Somerset Railway at Watchet has been successfully restored.

It was officially re-opened at a ribbion-cutting ceremony this week, after falling into disrepair last year, forcing it to be closed on health and safety grounds.

West Somerset Council worked in partnership with the local community to help restore the symbolic landmark, and Councillor Tony Knight, chairman of West Somerset Council and Watchet ward member, praised the efforts of both parties, describing them as “symbolic.”

“I am delighted that this historic and much loved landmark has been reinstated. It has reunited the town and it is really good to have this safe crossing back into the town centre,” he said.

“It is a great success for Watchet and symbolic of what can be achieved when the district council and local people support a community project.”

The bridge was blessed by the Rev Clive Gilbert, Vicar of the Benefice of Watchet and Williton, before Ron Smith cut the ribbon.

Paul Conibeare, general manager of the West Somerset Railway, added: “It’s a terrific day for the local community and we’re delighted to have brought one of our newly restored steam engines along to help with the celebrations.

“It is really positive that the footbridge is back in operation, particularly as the railway reopens for business this week with our special Dunster by Candlelight train services.”
