AN ASTRONOMY group in Dulverton has held its first official meeting after nearby Dunster's Stargazing Live event in January sparked a wealth of interest in the hobby.
Exmoor Stargazers were joined by 18 people aged from seven up to 70 at their inaugural gathering at Dulverton Middle School last week.
Orion featured as constellation of the month and clouds did little to dent the group’s enthusiasm when shown a tour of the night sky.
There was also a question-and-answer section and a telescope clinic, where an astronomer based in Tiverton helped repair two pieces of equipment.
Lucy Naylor, co-founder of Exmoor Stargazers, said: “Everyone had a lovely time and we had lots of very positive feedback. I think the demand might mean we meet more regularly – it could become fortnightly or even weekly.
“We are also trying to sort out a venue near Minehead or Porlock so people from that area can attend easily – we welcome anyone with suggestions to get in touch.”
The group is also working with local tourism businesses who are interested in incorporating astronomy into their visitors’ stays in the area.
Dulverton astronomer Peter Tout said: “I thought it went very well indeed – better than expected. In fact, if more people come, we are going to have to find a bigger room!
“The group is eager to establish a youth section and a sample programme of events was set out with the emphasis on the group being led by the members.”
Annual membership costs £10 for adults, £5 for under-16s, £15 for a couple and £20 for a family.
New member Anne Ansell, from Dulverton, said: “I am a complete beginner and found the evening really interesting and inspiring. The group members were so enthusiastic. It has been quite exciting looking up at the sky and knowing what things are – having a bit more knowledge is what it’s all about.”
The next meeting is at Dulverton Middle School on Thursday, March 29 at 7pm.
