A TEENAGED driver has been handed a suspended sentence for causing the death of his 17-year-old passenger by careless driving after a crash in Crowcombe.

Charlie Blandford-Corp, 18, of Staunton Road in Minehead, was driving the Citroen Saxo car when it left the road and hit a tree at 3pm on January 7.

West Somerset Community College student Bethany-Paige Adams, of Williton, was a passenger and died at the scene as a result of the collision.

Blandford-Corp was sentenced today (July 30) Taunton Magistrates Court after pleaded guilty to the charge at an earlier hearing.

In addition to the four-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, he was ordered to undertake 200 hours of unpaid work and must adhere to an electronically monitored curfew between 9pm and 5am for 12 weeks starting tonight.

He also received an 18-month driving ban.

Sentencing, the magistrate said: “We have thought long and hard about this and we are giving you the maximum penalty that we feel able to give in the circumstances of this offence and taking into account your early guilty plea.”

He was warned that if he breaks any of the requirements or commits another offence, he will have to serve the four-month prison sentence.
