Creech St Michael allotments open for growing
GREEN-FINGERED people are getting their hands dirty at an allotment set up in the village.
Plots have been snapped up fast as 24 of the 25 available will start having produce grown in them from this week.
Old allotments were lost to housing years ago, but the interest generated by the new ones shows residents are keen to grow their own.
The parish council backed the idea and set up an Allotment Association, which Mike Berryman will chair.
He said: “We were lucky to find a field which we were then able to quickly take on with a five-year rolling lease.
“Most of the allotments have been rented out, but others can be established fairly quickly within the current land allocation available.”
The county council helped with marking out, preparation and water installation with a £500 donation.
County councillor David Fothergill said: “This is a wonderful community project where people of all ages can get involved.
“It encourages healthy activity and sustainable local food production, and everyone involved has worked really hard to make the project a reality.”
