A DIFFERENT voice will be heard in the streets of Watchet as the role of town crier is passed on after 25 years.

David Milton will take over from Alec Danby, donning the well-known costume to inform and greet people from  within and outside the town.

His first official engagement is to open proceedings at the Trafalgar Day celebrations on Sunday, October 21.

David said: “I would say Alec hasn’t set a benchmark but more of a pole vaulting pole and I will only be able to do it my way – I can’t imitate him.

“I am doing it for Watchet and will do my best but I will put a different slant on it.

“I think the tradition itself is very important. Not many places still have a town crier and it’s important in promoting Watchet’s profile.”
