A FIRE at a scrap yard near Taunton's Obridge flyover last night (Tuesday) was started deliberately, the fire service has confirmed.

Crowds gathered as flames engulfed the Taunton Deane Direct Labour Organisation depot at Priorswood at around 7pm.

Fire crews from Taunton, Bridgwater and Wiveliscombe battled as several cars were set alight and their gas tanks exploded.

They extinguished the blaze just after 8pm using two hose reel jets, two foam jets and four breathing apparatus.

Between 10 and 15 scrap vehicles suffered significant fire damage.
