A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said: "We were called just after 1pm to reports of a crash on the M5.

"We sent a double crewed ambulance and an air ambulance to the incident and a motorcyclist was taken to hospital via air ambulance for treatment."

A Highways England spokesman said: "Drivers planning to travel northbound on the M5 this afternoon are advised to plan their journeys and allow extra time following a closure between Wellington and Taunton.

"The northbound carriageway between junction 26 (Wellington) and junction 25 (Taunton) has been closed to enable police to carry out investigations following an incident involving a motorcycle at 1.05pm.

"Traffic on the southbound carriageway was blocked temporarily for the air ambulance to land at the scene and the northbound carriageway will be reopened as soon as it safe to do so.

"A solid black triangle diversion is in place at junction 26, with northbound traffic following the A38 to rejoin the M5 at junction 25.
