A WELL-loved Wellington woman was nominated to join the MP for Taunton in switching on the Christmas lights at a late night shopping event.

President of the Wellington WI group, Karen Janas, joined Ms Pow last night (November 3) at the Emporium Somerset to switch on the lights and start the festive season.

Crowds gathered for the night that was arranged to spread the Christmas cheer and to raise money for SURE.

Cato Cooper, co-owner of The Emporium Somerset, said: "We were absolutely delighted to have Rebecca and Karen attend our special late night fundraising event for our charity of the year, SURE.

“Attendees were offered prosecco and nibbles in exchange for a donation to the charity and we extended our opening hours until 9pm so people could get some late night shopping done.

“We put out a call to the community to nominate someone who they felt deserved to be a VIP for the event and we received lots of nominations for Karen as she does such great work in the community and puts lots of time and effort into the local Wellington WI group.

“We’d like to thank Karen and Rebecca for coming along and helping and to all of our valued customers who attended and donated money to S.U.R.E.

"We’re totting up how much was raised and will add it to all of the other funds raised throughout the year.”

SURE is registered charity that works to raise funds to provide cancer diagnosis and treatment at Musgrove Park Hospital's Beacon Centre.

Karen Janas said: "I was humbled and delighted to be nominated for event and it was a lovely and enjoyable evening.”
