WELLINGTON'S most popular car park in North Street is to partially close for four days starting today (April 18) for an extensive overhaul.
The car park will be resurfaced – but it is not as simple as it sounds.
The existing surface will be removed and a 70mm layer laid, almost twice the depth of normal surfacing.
The extra depth will make the car park far more resilient to the constant wear and tear of vehicles.
North Street car park has suffered from a poor surface, made worse by drivers who use the area as a 'rat-run' or cut-through.
Alternative parking can be found in South Street and Longforth Road and the advisory signs will make drivers aware of the options.
A spokesman for Taunton Deane Borough Council said: “We are aware that the closure will cause inconvenience for drivers but it is only for four days and the new surface will be a significant improvement.
“All car parks suffer wear and tear but the damage in the North Street car park has been made worse as some motorists use it as a cut-through. The surface was never designed to be as resilient as a normal road.”
