'Virtual footpath' talks to improve safety in Creech St Michael

Somerset County Gazette: Cllr David Fothergill at the site of the proposed virtual footpath Cllr David Fothergill at the site of the proposed virtual footpath

A 'VIRTUAL footpath designed to improve the safety of pedestrians near the primary school could be placed along a road in the village later this year.

The proposals came about after concerns that for around 100 metres on North End, children, the elderly and mothers with prams from the nearby school were stepping into the road because there was no pavement.

A virtual footpath would involve a stretch of coloured paint along the road to give walkers an area to follow in contrast to a regular raised curb pavement.

The stretch of road is between the junction of West View and the roundabout and county councillor and governor of Creech St Michael Primary School David Fothergill said there were hopes of a permanent footpath but that restrictions in the road would not allow it.

He said: “After a lot of consideration by County Highways a proposal for a virtual footpath has been drawn up due to restrictions in road width, sight lines, land ownership and traffic management.

“This scheme would also be supported by the appropriate signage and road markings.”

The drawings for the path are now at the preliminary stage and Cllr Fothergill is looking to hear residents' views on the proposal and anyone interested in having their input or looking at the drawings of the path can contact him on 07765-256256 or email DJAFothergill@somerset.gov.uk

FreeSpeech? says...

Sounds like a great idea but alas I fear a minority of CSM residents and a fair few of the idiots that use it as a rat run will not even notice as they still haven't realised that the big white circle in the the road at Northend is a mini roundabout and they should give way to the right, in fact most think once they clear the last speed hump 150 yrds up the road they have right of way and try to reach 30mph before entering the afore mentioned roundabout(muppets and dingbats).
