WORK to improve a historic Taunton shopping street has been completed – nearly a fortnight ahead of schedule.

Tired old paving slabs which were frequently coming loose and needed temporary repairs have been replaced after Somerset County Council teamed up with Taunton Deane Borough Council and traders in Bath Place.

The scheme was carried out during the winter months to minimise disruption and teams worked with Bath Place Traders Association to find a replacement material that complemented and enhanced the area.

Somerset County Gazette:

Cllr David Fothergill, cabinet member for highways at County Hall, said: “I’ve heard so many good things about the workers on site who have done a very professional job, frequently halting work to ensure customers could reach the shops.

"At the same time, the local businesses have been incredibly patient and accommodating of messy work which was literally on their doorsteps.

“I think the new paving looks great – not only is it smart and safe for people to walk on, but it also blends in really well with the historic area.”

Cllr Roger Habgood, the Deane’s executive member for planning and transportation, said: "The traders in this unique shopping area are always working to improve their environment and enhance the shopping experience.

"This upgrade in conjunction with the two councils has embraced that ethic and is a real testament to collaborative working.”

Philippe Messy, owner of the Little Wine Shop, said: “The re-paving of Bath Place looks beautiful now.

"The team that did it were so helpful and professional throughout the whole process, not only with us traders but also with the general public who were passing."
