A BOOK of condolence has been opened at a Taunton school after its longest serving employee died.

Di Hartland, who was 61, had worked in the kitchens at Taunton School since the age of 15, when she joined as a dining room assistant.

She died on Saturday evening after a short illness.

She had followed her mother and aunt into working at the school, where she clocked up 46 years' service.

Headmaster Lee Glaser said: "Di was an irrepressibly cheerful character whose irreverent charm endeared her to the whole school community.

"Those who attended last year’s Commemoration celebrations will recall how she was singled out for her long service and publicly thanked for her outstanding contribution to the wider school.

"Di’s family have asked that we remember her hard at work, in her apron, with her cap on, with her quick wit, cheeky smile and enduring kindness.

"We are all truly saddened by Di’s passing, but know that our lives are richer for having known her."

The school chapel is open for anyone to pay their respects, along with the book of condolence.

Mr Glaser added: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Di’s family at this difficult time."
