FUNDRAISERS are giving people in Taunton, Wellington and West Somerset the chance to decide upon their New Year’s resolution early.

They are looking for people to raise money for charity by signing up for next year’s Soroptimist Swimathon.

Hugh Croad, one of the organisers, said: “If you struggle to find a worthwhile yet achievable New Year’s resolution, say you’ll take part in the February Soroptimist Swimathon and then relax, knowing you will soon be helping some really deserving local causes.

“It’s the local connection that makes the difference here. We all support Children in Need, Comic Relief and so on – which of course are very worthy national fund-raisers. But in the last 22 years the Taunton Soroptimist Swimathon has proudly raised almost £500,000 for local charities, making it one of the most successful fund-raising events in the South West.”

This year’s charities are: St Margaret’s Hospice, Taunton Association for the Homeless, Somerset Sight and Somerset Trust for Arts and Recreation.

Participants spend an hour swimming lengths at their own speed, in rotation within their team.

Hugh added: “The great thing is, this is a fun event – you really don’t have to be a budding Michael Phelps. You can doggy paddle, side-swim, breast stroke or whatever you like as long as you can manage two lengths in a row. As well as those charitable warm feelings, every swimmer gets a medal.”

The event, which will be opened by national and international swimmers from Team Somerset, takes place on February 19 and 20 at Taunton School pool - to sign up, call 01823-423187.
