AN action group formed to fight plans for 650 homes on the south side of Wellington is staging a public meeting next week.

Save Wellington says the town’s infrastructure will not cope with a major proposed development at Jurston Farm and it has been leafleting and campaigning on the issue.

The group says it received “overwhelming support” from the public at an exhibition last week at the King’s Church staged by the developers C G Fry.

A spokesman for Save Welling-ton said: “A huge number of people went along to the exhibition and we spoke to them all.

“We received overwhelming support with only one person in the entire six hours saying they were not opposed to the development. Many people offered to help deliver protest leaflets or said they would be coming along to our public meeting.”

Save Wellington is staging a meeting at Wellesley Park Primary School on Tuesday at 7pm and is hoping for a huge turnout.

The group says it is keen to spread the word in Wellington that development of the site is not a “done deal”.

“We undoubtedly have public support on our side and our campaign is gathering momentum,” added the spokesman.

Save Wellington says it will be distributing leaflets to homes throughout the town and it is also planning further protest activities in the run-up to outline planning permission being sought for the development.

CG Fry & Son says the principle of development on the Jurston Farm site has already been accepted, as Taunton Deane Council has included it in its core strategy.

It has, however, said it will take on board people’s views before it submits a planning application for the project.
