STOP Hinkley and Green Campaigners will be joined by Green MEP for the South West Molly Scott-Cato tomorrow, (September 26), at Hinkley Point.

They say they will be demonstrating against the news that the Hinkley C is on the verge of being given the green light from the EU Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia.

The European Commission had been investigating whether the terms of the subsidy deal struck with the Government constituted illegal state aid.

Austria has also announced that it will launch a fresh legal challenge if the European Commission approves the plan to build the £16billion nuclear power plant.

Stop Hinkley Campaign spokesperson Allan Jeffrey said: “Irrespective of what we think about the possibility of an accident or routine emissions of radioactivity into the environment, or the fact that there is no solution to dealing with the dangerous waste, this deal is economically bonkers”.

Green MEP Molly Scot-Cato added: “A decision like this demonstrates why so many British people are sceptical about the EU.

"The rules on fair competition are perfectly clear but can apparently be ignored when there is a political deal to be made.

"Agreeing such a huge implicit subsidy for Hinkley will make it impossible for those who generate electricity in a clean and sustainable way to compete”.

A spokesperson for EDF Energy told the County Gazette earlier this week: "Confirmation that Vice-President Almunia recommends that the College of Commissioners approve the agreement on Hinkley Point C is another positive step forward for this vital project.

"The State Aid investigation has been rigorous, robust and thorough and we expect that the College of Commissioners will recognise this.

"Hinkley Point C is an important project which will deliver Europe-wide objectives, offering the prospect of reliable, secure and low carbon electricity for many decades to come as well as boosting jobs and skills."
