Minehead's first-ever Harbour Festival is on course to raise a five-figure sum for the lifeboats.

More than 30 rafts took part in Sunday's annual RNLI raft race, while kayak races, children's entertainment and stalls complemented a full programme of live music.

The weekend's events were rounded off in the traditional way with a spectacular seafront firework display funded by local businesses.

Money from sponsors and other sources is still to be totalled but organisers say the two-day event will almost certainly pass the £10,000 mark.

This year's raft race was shortened to take place across Minehead Bay, rather than starting at Blue Anchor as in previous years.

Minehead Barbarians paddled home in first in the fun race, with the team from the Hobby Horse Inn coming second and the Specsavers entry finishing third.

Elsewhere Watchet Sea Scouts took home the coveted House Doctors Cup for best fancy dress with their battleship-themed raft.

In the Pro Raft Race, teams from Hereford dominated with Wonder Y rafters crossing the line first, ahead of Madsatblack in second and Wonder Y ladies managing to take third.

Visitors were also entertained by live music from Pearl and the Diamond Geezers and The Salt Rat Flats among others, and were dazzled by the firework display, which were accompanied by a soundtrack from some of Hollywood's biggest movies.

Minehead RNLI chairman Bryan Stoner said the two-day event had been a fantastic success with local people showing outstanding support for the work of the lifeboat service, and added that it would not have been possible without a huge amount of support from sponsors FatYak Kayaks and The Old Ship Aground Inn.

"I believe as a new event the festival did spectacularly well and really did offer something different for everyone - and we are delighted so many people came down to support it," he said.

"Now out priority is to start looking at ways to make it even better next year."
