Keen walkers are invited to take on the Minehead 10 mile challenge this Saturday in an event organised by the South West Coast Path.

The challenge will see walkers take on a trek from Minehead Seafront along the coast to the picturesque harbour at Porlock Weir, encompassing some beautiful views along the way.

People can park their cars in the Porlock central car park at 9am and will be given a coach transfer to the start point on Minehead Seafront ready to set off at 10am.

The trail, which will include the first section of the 630 mile South West Coast Path, will take walkers through woodlands, along clifftops and past streams.

A spokesman for the South West Coast Path said: "There is a lot to look out for, as the Exmoor coast provides a rich habitat for many beautiful and rare species of flora and fauna, including the blackneck moth, red deer, stag beetles and whitebeam trees (relatives of the rowan or mountain ash, unique to Exmoor).

"The force of the sea is really evident at the end of the journey, where it is essential to follow the sign-posted paths. In 1996 the natural 6000 year-old shingle ridge across Porlock Bay was breached by a storm, resulting in the dramatic flooding of the fields behind at each high tide. This land is now changing from farmland to saltmarsh, creating a very special habitat for marine life and birds."

Tickets cost £20 for individuals, £40 for families (up to four people) and groups of five or more cost £50 and are available from http://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk/events/challenge/.
