FOR those of us who struggle with the reasons to exercise it is time to take some inspiration from 94-year-old Mimi Vallas who works out twice a week at the Exmoor Fitness Centre in Dulverton which has given her a new lease of life.

Mimi, who is originally from Wales, cycles on the spinning bike, takes a walk on the treadmill and uses the weight machines as part of her twice-weekly routine, sometimes walking to the centre from her residential home in the town if the weather allows it.

Mimi says that the regular exercise gives her a positive mental attitude and enjoys keeping active: “ I am very lucky but sometimes you can think yourself old and you are not old and it is important to get out and keep moving. It’s very motivating and helps the brain as well as the body.”

Mimi was referred to the Exmoor Fitness Centre by her GP as part of the Wellness Works scheme following two operations on her legs.

She still walks with a stick but finds that she can still find the energy and motivation to exercise: “I don’t overdo it at the gym, I stop if I get too tired and the gym staff are very helpful with advice about how much to do but it has made a great difference to me and helps me to stay active.”

Mimi, who was a member of the WRAF during Second World War, worked on Barrage Balloons before moving on to signals and deciphering codes or messages.

She was born into a family of 11 children in South Wales in a house which did not have any running water. Although she had a challenging start in life she has always enjoyed working, keeping active and being sociable. She still drives, occasionally taking friends shopping or for social outings: “Keeping active is the key and I try and encourage others as it is important to make the effort to go out and meet people and take part in life.”

1610 health development manager, Amanda Godsell says that Mimi is an inspiration to others, especially the elderly: “A gym or fitness centre is not just about losing pounds or inches but keeping your mind active and positive and enjoying social interaction.

"This is so important for retired or older people who may feel lonely or isolated, there is a lot of support and advice available from our staff on how to exercise.

"The Wellness Works scheme makes exercise more accessible for those with a health issue, it can also be rewarding to be part of a local community coming into the gym regularly where people know you and where you will be guaranteed a warm welcome.”

The Exmoor Fitness Centre is also extending its opening hours on Fridays from 4.30pm-7.30pm. Ring 01398 323075 for more information.
