A RESCUE mission was launched in Watchet after a woman fell into the water.

Watchet Coastguard Rescue team were called to the harbour at 10.22am yesterday (Sunday, October 8) to reports of an unknown person in the water.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue's specialist rescue unit from Bridgwater were in the area training and were first to be alerted to incident by a member of public.

A spokesman said: "Watchet CRT were on scene very quickly and prepared themselves for a swift water rescue, however this was not needed as DFSR had recovered the casualty on their boat and administered first aid and extracted themselves to the outer slipway to await the arrival of the ambulance service, Watchet CRT & DSFR carried out a thorough search of the marina and outer harbour to ensure there were know other casualties in the water.

Minehead RNLI were also tasked by UK Coastguard but stood down en route, so they continued with their Sunday morning training exercise in Minehead.

"Williton Fire Station were tasked but were also stood down en route also in attendance was Avon and Somerset Police who were requested by Watchet CRT due to the casualty’s partner threatening to follow the ambulance in his car to Musgrove Park Hospital while clearly intoxicated.

"Let this be a timely reminder to wear life jackets when onboard your vessels while at sea and moored up in dock, and let’s also remember not to mix alcohol and water, water temperatures this time of year are extremely cold, anyone entering the water in these circumstances may only have 10-15 minutes survival time, today this casualty was very lucky, had this been in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning we certainly would be dealing with a fatality."
