A Dulverton boy with Tourette's syndrome is hoping to reach out to others with the condition by filming a documentary about his everyday life.

Brent Zillwood was diagnosed with the condition when he was 15 but has since learnt to control his symptoms by pursuing creative interests like music and skating.

He is filming a short documentary, Life's a Twitch, which he hopes Channel Four will broadcast.

The 18-year-old, who went to Dulverton Middle School before joining West Somerset Community College, said: “I've had it all my life but it gets triggered by stress.

“It causes vocal outbursts and physical ticks.

“The vocal outbursts can be abusive comments or random words.

“I noticed when I was doing creative things like my film studies course the ticks weren't coming on, so I kept on with it.”

The making of the documentary by the University of Plymouth student is currently being filmed by ITV.

He added: “I'm trying to inform people and other sufferers about coping but also raise awareness.

“I want to base it round the social issues of Tourette's syndrome, as well as show viewers why sufferers do certain hobbies to escape difficult social situations.

“I also want to offer other sufferers an escape route from the physically draining symptoms.”

Brent said his documentary will explore the unexplained benefits creative pursuits have but he also plans on adding a light-hearted touch to his film.

He said: “We will show a more uplifting, rather than 'doom and gloom' view of Tourette's.”
