ENERGY company EDF has been heavily criticised by West Somerset Council for its handling of the proposed new build at Hinkley C.

A lengthy report, issued jointly with Sedgemoor District Council, outlines concerns about housing, transport, the economy and the environment.

The report, looking at the stage two consultation proposals, stresses the lack of information regarding the long term impact of the build.

The report says: “In particular, there is an overarching concern EDF have not developed or communicated their vision and objectives for the integration of the Hinkley Point C development, including associated developments, into the physical, social and economic fabric of the area.”

A need to further consider how worker accommodation could be adapted to meet the longer-term requirements of communities was highlighted and designing accommodation blocks to allow for later conversion to family housing was one of the ideas discussed.

The councils' report said the rationale for a park and ride site at Williton was not made clear, nor were the transport and traffic management benefits.

They also said the long-term employment and economic benefits were not given enough consideration David Eccles from EDF Energy, said the firm would consider all feedback from its stage two consultation, which ends on October 4.

He said: “We have a positive and constructive ongoing dialogue with local stakeholders, including the relevant local authorities.

“We will ensure that any significant adverse effects of the construction, operation or decommissioning of the power station are appropriately mitigated.”

West Somerset Council is holding a special full council meeting to discuss the report on Thursday.
