IT has been another bumper week for the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment (SURE) campaign.

A massive £1,416 was donated to help towards the £600,000 target set by the SURE campaigners.

The group wants to raise at least that amount to provide state-of-the-art scanning and treatment equipment for a new cancer centre that is due to be built at Taunton's Musgrove Park Hospital this year.

The £600,000 will provide a top-of-the-range CT scanner/simulator that will pinpoint the exact size and location of a tumour within the body, and then specifically target that area for treatment.

It will also pay for a lead mask-making machine, which will provide masks to protect unaffected areas of the body from the radiotherapy treatment, as well as training for staff to use the equipment and the first three years' running costs.

Since the SURE campaign started in 2000 well over £450,000 has been raise.

This week donations have come from Mrs Plentey, who gave £20, St John Baptist Church in Durston- £55, Mr Jennings - £111, Mr and Mrs Porter of the Whitmore School of Dancing - £230 and Debenhams - £1,000.

That brings the total raised since the County Gazette joined forces with SURE to £34,424.
