FOOTBALL: Towler snatches late victory for Wellington

SAM Towler's 93rd minute winner secured a first Western League, division one win in five attempts for Wellington as they moved to within three points of third place on Saturday.

With a dozen games to go their 3-2 victory at home to Calne Town was an important win for the Tangerines.

Wellington took an early lead as skipper Tom Ellis rose to head home well from a free kick that was delivered by Jack Adams.

But a free kick at the other end saw Calne equalise with a low shot that just evaded Jake Viney in the Wellington goal.

Wellington were enjoying the lion's share of the possession, but could not turn it into the goals they needed to show the gap between the two sides.

They did get a second when Ollie Chamberlain's soft shot almost dribbled past the Calne keeper and into the bottom right hand corner. There was no massive celebration, but it did give the scoreline a more realistic feel.

Calne equalised for a second time when they raided down the right wing and stepped through some indecisive Wellington defending to score a good goal.

Wellington saw Tom Ellis head straight at the keeper with the clock running down and a shot was saved by the keeper's legs.

But Calne were undone when their keeper made a fine stop only to see the ball almost get stuck in the bog that is the Wellington goalmouth at the moment and it was a simple task for Towler to tap the ball over the line.
