SOMERSET spinner Jack Leach is set to undergo surgery on his knee after he sustained an injury whilst representing England on tour in India.

He jarred his knee on the ground while diving near the boundary on day one of the First Test in India and then further damaged it in the field the following day.

After resting for the remainder of the tour, and in fact flying home to Taunton, Leach has now confirmed he will get surgery.

"I'm going to have an operation to get the rest of the swelling out because it's not budging," Leach told BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday.

"It was the second ball of the first innings in the field so that whole game I was playing with this knee problem.

"I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done and then hopefully I can get back to playing cricket. I'd love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again and hopefully that can happen again once I've got this sorted."

This is just the latest of a long list of injury setbacks for Leach who has now reached 36 career caps for England.

He had only just returned from missing the Ashes last summer due to a stress fracture in his back and also got concussed in the field during England's test against New Zealand at Lord's in 2022.

England are set to take on West Indies during the Summer back on home soil so Leach will be hoping to be match fit by then.

However Somerset's County Championship season starts on April 5 away to Kent and seeing Leach ready for that fixture appears unlikely.
