ELMS Lawn Tennis Club held their Club Championships at the end of a successful season.

The afternoon started with the ladies singles, which was won, for the fifth year, by Alison Kalwa-Cawser against Monika Blum 6-0, 6-3.

The men’s singles was won by Duncan Alexander who beat last year’s winner Neil Robson 6-2, 6-3.

The ladies doubles was won convincingly by Margaret Morse and Janet Waplington beating Monika Blum and Julie Kilby 6-3, 6-0.

The men’s doubles was a very close contest and resulted in John Selby and Nick Butling beating Steve Matthews and Barry Hughes 6-3, 5-7, 6-0. The Mixed doubles, another exciting match was won by Margaret Morse and Bob Wood beating Duncan and Cathy Alexander 6-3, 7-5.

Prizes were presented by Mrs Gladys Cunneber a supportive long-standing vice president.

The annual competition for the Joan Jeremiah Trophy was held on Bank Holiday Monday, with a record entry of 15 couples and unexpected sunshine.

An entertaining final set resulted in Hazel Dyke and Duncan Alexander beating Alison Kalwa-Cawser and Sully Hilliard 7-5. Chairman Barry Hughes tanked his committee for their help during the year and Sylvia Sealey (secretary) presented Lady Member of the Year Cup to Joan Jeremiah and the Men’s Cup went to Richard Hardiman.

THE Somerset LTA sealed a superb summer season with brothers James and Toby Mitchell sweeping all before them at the Junior County Closed Championships.

Just days after a stunning double for Somerset had seen Taunton’s Andrew Bettles (16s) and James Marsalek (18s) win respective National singles titles, the county junior tournament provided some great tennis. A brace of titles apiece for the Mitchell’s saw them dominate the boys’ singles, with Toby beating Sam Edwards 6-0, 6-4 in the 18 and under final before taking the 16 and under crown with an identical action-replay.

James beat Jordan Clayton 6-3, 6-3 to capture the 14 and under singles title and his straight sets defeat of Cory Niccolls saw him lift the 12 and under trophy. Sophie Butland won the girls’ 14 and under singles and young Sophie Hamilton, winner of a title at the 500-strong Torbay Open in August, beat Maya Cox 10-8 to win the girls’ 8 and under singles.

Hayley Butland teamed up with newly-crowned girls’ 18 and under champion Zoe Leach to win the 18 and under doubles.

Taunton’s national 16 and under champion Andrew Bettles has been awarded a wildcard into the ITF $10,000 AEGON Pro-Series event in Wrexham.

Taunton ladies’ were beaten by Edgbaston Priory 8-4 at the AEGON Team Tennis National Open Finals at Bournemouth. Taunton’s only winners were Natalie Ayton who beat Leyla Ogan 6-0, 2-6, 6-2 and Rachel Apsey who added two more points with victory over Manisha Foster 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
