DIRECTOR of rugby Lee Waddon hopes Taunton’s second-half display against Exmouth on Saturday will serve as a warning against complacency.

Taunton led 29-8 at half-time but went completely off the boil after the interval and had to settle for a 32-13 victory.

The win took Taunton’s league winning run to 31 consecutive games and helped them stay a point clear of fellow 100% side Old Patesians in National Three South-West.

Waddon said: “We started where we left off in the first-half, but went completely flat after the break and it’s difficult to say why.

“We’ve been playing at such a level of intensity that, with the bonus point already in the bag, complacency seemed to creep in.

“We started throwing the ball around like it was a sevens game.

“We’ve got a style of play that has brought us success and didn’t stick to it in the second half.

“It goes to show that you can’t take anything for granted in this division.

“Exmouth might be one of the bottom sides but they took advantage when we gave them the chance and won the second half 5-3.

“We have to maintain the same level of intensity at all times.

“We’ve spoken about it at training this week and I’m confident we will be back to where we were on Saturday.”

Taunton are home again on Saturday when Gloucestershire side Coney Hill are the visitors.

Waddon said: “Coney Hill didn’t have the best of starts to the season but have won their last two and we can’t take them lightly.”

Taunton’s victory over Exmouth also enabled them to go top of the rugbyroundup.com national league, a table of all clubs in England.

The side in second place are Taunton closest rivals in National Three, Old Patesians, who they face on December 5.
