SOMERSET 2nd XI lost out to their Surrey counterparts, who included Mark Ramprakash in their line-up, in the Championship match at Reigate Priory.

After being put in to bat first, Somerset openers Alex Barrow (17) and James Burke shared a partnership of 29 before the latter was dismissed for 13. After the first wicket fell, only Stuart Thompson, batting at number six, with 20, provided much resistance as Somerset slumped to 75.

In reply, Surrey had reached 194-6 by the end of the first day.

The second day was washed out but, when play resumed on the final day, the hosts were eventually bowled out for 220. Pick of the Somerset bowlers was Robin Mutch, who took 4- 34 off his 17 overs.

Batting for a second time, Somerset were all out for 189, Tim Miles top scoring with 53, Thompson making 29 while Peterson hit an unbeaten 34.

Surrey reached 46 without loss to win by 10 wickets.

The Second XI Trophy match between the two sides whichwas due to take place on Tuesday was abandoned without a ball being bowled.
