THE weather was the only winner at the Playing Field yesterday as Wellington’s game against promotion-chasing Bradford Town was abandoned at half-time with the home side leading 3-2.

Looking to avenge a controversial 2-1 defeat at Bradford only a fortnight earlier, Wellington got off to a flying start in torrential rain and hail by scoring twice in the first nine minutes.

Manager Jamie Ward drafted in Bridgwater Town players Ross McNab and Tim Legg after their game was called off and it was McNab who opened the scoring after only three minutes, rising to head home a pinpoint cross by Kyle Bassett.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 as youngster Luke Redrup played the ball over the top of the Bradford defence and Bassett coolly lobbed keeper Charlie Heydon.

With conditions worsening as the half progressed, Bradford pulled a goal back after 21 minutes through Sam Jordan although Wellington quickly restored their two goal advantage when McNab ran on to a ball out of defence to produce another clinical finish.

To their credit, both sides continued to play some decent football and Bradford made it 3-2 nine minutes before the break when a low shot reached Jordan, who poked the ball home from close range.

However, at half-time the referee, Mr Kevin Williams, decided the pitch had become unplayable and brought proceedings to a premature halt.
