AFTER a dismal start last season, Wellington got off to a welcome win at Keynsham which was played on the their 4G artifical pitch.

Wellington fielded four new players – Legg, Porter, Piper and Chamberlain – with both Viney and Dennehy making welcome returns after injury. After a competent early start, Wellington had an early let-off when the Keynsham forward went through but Viney made a fine one-on-one save. Wellington got on top and a Westlake cross saw Piper go close with a header. With Wellington looking the better side, a brillant dummy by Dennehy put Westlake clear and his cross was fumbled by the Keynsham keeper and Chamberlain was there to steer the ball in to put Wellington one up. At half-time, Connor Bryant had to be taken off suffering from concussion and his brother, Jack, replaced him.

The second half saw Keynsham get on top, but with Legg and Ellis competing for everything, and Viney catching everything which was thrown at him, the score remained the same.

Wellington, who had always looking dangerous when they were on the break, then stunned Keynsham with Chamberlain going through to make it 2-0.

Wellington were now in charge but Ford got booked and then, with five minutes left, a foul by Legg, which also earned him a booking, saw Keynsham pull one back with a header looping over Viney.

A corner to Keynsham saw Wellington again break and Piper, who had been outstanding up front, go round the keeper near the halfway line before rolling it in to give Wellington a promising start to the new season.

Wellington adjusted to the 4G astro surface exceptionally well and were the better footballing side.

With all the new signings doing well it was a pleasing start to the new season.
