THERE was double disappointment for Lucy Shuker at the Australian Open this morning, as the wheelchair tennis player was knocked out in the semi-finals of both the women's singles and doubles.

World number eight Shuker, from Ashbrittle near Taunton, faced the second seed Yui Kamiji of Japan in her singles semi-final, and was beaten 6-3 6-2.

From 3-0 down in the first set she rallied to draw level with Kamiji, but the Japanese player ultimately proved too strong.

Shuker could only win 49 per cent of points on her first serve and 29 per cent on her second serve in the straight-sets defeat.

She then paired up with Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis, whom she had beaten in the singles quarter-final yesterday, for the women's doubles against Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot (also of the Netherlands).

But there was more semi-final heartache for Shuker, as she and Buis were defeated 7-5 6-2.

Shuker and Buis, runners-up in this competition in 2013, began well with four straight games to lead the Dutch top seeds and Paralympic champions 4-2, but Griffioen and Van Koot fought back to win the match and progress to the final.
