SUPER League Grand-Final winner Josh Jones – who was loaned to Taunton Titans at the beginning of the season - is to cut short his stay in rugby union for family reasons and return to the 13-man code.

The 22-year-old centre left St Helens at the end of the 2015 season to join Premiership club Exeter, but failed to break into their first team and is to head back to the north of England, along with partner Olivia who is expecting their first child in June.

Exeter coach Rob Baxter said: "Obviously we're disappointed to see Josh move on, especially when we were starting to see him come through and show some really good qualities.

"Throughout his time here he has really impressed us with his professionalism, his willingness to learn and the commitment he has shown playing for us and for Taunton.

"That said, Josh's personal and family circumstances are the most important thing and although we're sad to see him move on, we wish him every success for the future and in finding a new contract back in the Super League."

Jones, who was a member of Saints' 2014 Grand-Final-winning team, played for the Chiefs' A League side and also on loan at Taunton Titans.

"I want to thank Rob, all the coaches, the players, staff and supporters for everything," Jones said. "Rob gave me a great opportunity and a new challenge but due to family circumstances I have to cut it short early."

Huddersfield, who are looking to replace departed England second rower Brett Ferres, have been linked with a move for Jones, who started 11 matches in the back row for St Helens in 2015.
