THE post office in WH Smith is to become Taunton's main branch.

An additional counter is being added to the existing post office layout in the store in Fore Street.

It will open seven days a week, offering customers 60 hours of service a week.

There has been uncertainty over the future of the main Taunton Post Office ever since the outlet in North Street closed in 2014. That premises is now occupied by Ask Italian restaurant.

It was run in the former County Stores until last year, before being temporarily located in premises in Canon Street Garage, off St James Street.

The Fore Street Post Office opened in WH Smith last October.

Somerset County Gazette:

A Post Office spokesperson said: "We have been working to establish a sustainable, permanent, solution to provide Post Office services in the area.

"We have taken the opportunity to review Post Office services in the local area and we have decided to merge Taunton branch service into the current Fore Street Post Office.

"It will be known as Fore Street Post Office and it will change to one of our main style branches.

"Fore Street Post Office is 170 metres from the closed North Street branch location, and we believe is in a suitable position to serve customers previously using the Taunton branch.

"Fore Street Post Office branch will be refurbished to accommodate the larger branch requirements offering a greater range of Post Office products and services including On Demand Travel Money, Vehicle Tax and On Demand Travel Insurance."

There will be two serving positions, one screened and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter.

The opening hours remain as Monday to Saturday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and Sunday 10.30am to 4.30pm.

The temporary service at Canon Street Garage will close once the refurbished Fore Street branch reopens.

The spokesperson added: "We are keen to restore a permanent, full-time mains branch to this community as soon as possible, so we have decided to go ahead with our plans."

The opportunity to give feedback close on Wednesday, June 1.
