THE owners of a Taunton town centre pub that closed almost eight years ago say they are "exploring options" in a bid to reopen it.

Drinks have not been served for several years in the once popular Apple and Parrot, in Corporation Street.

Star Pubs and Bars have over recent years unsuccessfully tried to attract a new operator.

In their latest bid to find someone to take on running the premises, the company has reverted to use the hostelry's former name, The Moat House.

A spokesperson for Star Pubs & Bars said: “We are exploring options for The Moat House in Taunton, which has been closed for a number of years.

"As soon as we have more details we’ll let you know.”

In an advert looking to find an operator, the company says an "exciting refurbishment" is planned at the pub, which has "well established trade".

The estimated minimum ingoing costs are £58,760 and the annual rent will be £33,041.

Back in November 2019 Star Pubs and Bars said they would carry out a major refurbishment of the premises, including smartening up the outside of the building, if the right person agreed to take it on.

At the time a spokesperson said: "It would serve excellent food and coffee to meet the needs of town centre visitors, residents and workers during the day and, with a premium drinks range including cocktails, would also be the place for a good night out.

"The Apple and Parrot is a beautiful building in a prime location and has lots of potential."

The Apple and Parrot closed in January 2016, when it was claimed the managing company had been sold.

At the time, Wayne S, the general manager, posted on Facebook: "The apple and parrot is currently closed after the managing company was sold.

"The future of the pub is to be determined by new owners.

"I am publishing this after my employment was terminated as a courtesy to all bands, performers and clientele.

"Please consider all bookings, shows, promotional earnings and such forth cancelled and void.

"I have no idea what the future holds for this venue but can simply say it has been a pleasure to have worked and partied with you all."
