A NEW branch of Poundland is all set to open this weekend after months of work to replace a former high-street retailer shop in Somerset.

It was revealed two months ago that the M&Co premises on Wells High Street would be replaced with a branch of the budget variety store, Poundland.

Work has been ongoing ever since, and it has now been announced that the new branch will open at 8am on Saturday December 9.Somerset County Gazette: Tradesmen have been working to refit the interior of the former M&Co premises prior to the opening of the new Poundland.Tradesmen have been working to refit the interior of the former M&Co premises prior to the opening of the new Poundland. When news first broke of the new store, Wells residents were generally pleased to learn the disused premises would be taken over by a new retailer.

One local said: "I've probably got an unpopular opinion here but I'm quite glad we're getting a Poundland.

"It'll create more jobs for locals and it's one less empty shop.

"Not everyone in Wells can afford to shop in the more expensive shops here - this might make all the difference for someone on a low budget."

Some locals were less enthusiastic however, as a disgruntled resident said: "Do we really need ANOTHER £1 shop?"
