WELLINGTON'S Christmas lights switch on is happening today - here is everything you need to know about the event.
Following Somerset’s battering from Storm Bert last weekend, many switch-on events across Somerset were pushed back or in some cases completely cancelled – for example, Taunton’s Winterfest.
Wellington's event is definitely going ahead and will start at 10am and finish at 6pm, when the light switch on will commence.
Who's there today?:
A former BBC correspondent will be joined by a local legend to speak at this year's event.
"This year we have a treat for you all – TWO incomparable Christmas Compères!" said a spokesperson from the Wellington Town Council.
"From 12pm to 4pm our Town Crier will be on the mic introducing acts and helping the day’s entertainment run smoothly. Not that he needs a microphone with that booming Town Crier voice!
"Then from 4pm to 6pm we have Former BBC Television Correspondent and Wellington native Clinton Rogers keeping us on track and belly-laughing in the run-up to the lights switching on at 6pm."

Entertainment:
The Christmas event is set to host a wide range of entertainment including fire jugglers and festive singers.
A list of today's proceedings is as follows:
- 12pm - Wellington prep school
- 12:25pm - Somerset Youth Theatre
- 1:35pm - Raquel and Bob
- 1:50pm - Rockwell Green Primary School
- 2pm - St John's Primary School
- 2:35pm - The Ukes of Wellington
- 3:15pm - IKB Year 2 Class
- 3:35pm - Blackdown Community Choir
- 4:05pm - Court Fields Glee Club
- 4:30pm - Wellington Majorettes
- 5pm - Miss Ivy Belle
- 5:45pm - Christmas message
Fuse (the fire jugglers) will be performing from 2pm onwards.
Parking:
Wellington Town Council reminded people that there should've been no parking on the high street last night (November 29) in preparation for this event.
"Please remember that there should be NO PARKING on High Street overnight on Friday as the road will be closed from 6am in preparation for the day's Christmas Market & Lights Switch On event," said a member of the Wellington Town Council.
"Car parks in Longforth Road (ASDA), South Street, and North Street will be free from 6pm on Friday 29th November and will remain free throughout the weekend."
Santa's Grotto:
Santa will be in Wellington today to greet everyone from 2pm - 5pm.
The grotto is free to visit but Santa will be seeing the last child at 5:45pm, in preparation for the Christmas lights switch on.
A visit to Santa might give you a chance to be gifted a special treat if you've been good this year.
"We were pleased and relieved that Storm Bert has had no impact on our plans for our Christmas Market and Light Switch on event this coming Saturday 30 November 2024," Dave Farrow, Town Clerk of Wellington Town Council said: "The weather forecast is looking promising at the moment so we are keeping our fingers crossed and looking forward to welcoming our community and visitors to the town to what should be a fantastic day."
